The craft

Made by hand, the right way.

Every Ansari rug is made properly, by hand, in our own workshop — built to be lived with for decades, whether it is a single piece or part of a large order.

Inside the Ansari Rugs workshop in Mirzapur
Our story

Rooted in Mirzapur, made for the world

Mirzapur sits on the Ganga in the heart of India’s carpet belt, a region whose looms have supplied the world’s finest floors for generations. Ansari Rugs is a family workshop here, and it remains one today.

Our artisans work under our own roof — one set of standards, one family’s name on every piece, and the freedom to make each rug exactly as it should be made. Our rugs are found in homes, design studios, hotels and shops around the world, made one at a time or in volume, to the same standard.

Four traditions

The weaves we master

The construction decides how a rug feels underfoot, how it wears and how it ages. Here is the honest difference.

The heirloom

Hand knotted

Each knot is tied by hand around the warp and locked in place by the weft, so the pattern lives in the very structure of the rug. The slowest way to make a rug and the longest-lived — a piece that is handed down rather than replaced.

The sculptor’s choice

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a stretched canvas by hand, then sheared, carved and finished. Tufting takes a deep, plush pile beautifully and allows sculpted, high-low surfaces and bold contemporary designs.

Quiet texture

Handloom

Woven on a loom with a looped or cut pile, usually in solid tones or subtle textures. The natural choice when the floor should recede and the room should speak. Available to order.

Light & reversible

Flatweave durrie

Woven flat with no pile at all — the pattern is the weave itself, which makes a durrie reversible. Light, low enough to sit beneath a door and easy to care for.

Where it begins

Where it begins

Carefully chosen wool waits its turn. Every rug starts here, where raw material meets inherited skill.

Colour, chosen by hand

Colour, chosen by hand

Each shade is selected with intention, building the palette that gives a rug its depth and character.

Setting the loom

Setting the loom

Thousands of warp threads are prepared with precision — the structure on which every design is built.

The art of weaving

Patient hands guide every thread into place, building texture and detail one movement at a time.

The warp (tana) is wound and tensioned on the beam, ready for weaving to begin on the handloom.

Materials

Fibres chosen for the life of the rug

Four classics — and open to anything you have in mind.

Wool

Resilient, naturally stain-resistant and warm underfoot. The backbone of most of our rugs.

Silk

For lustre and fine detail — as accents that catch the light, or throughout for true luxury.

Cotton

Crisp, light and practical. The fibre of the classic Indian durrie.

Jute

Earthy, textural and natural — for rooms that favour calm, organic materials.

Not on the list? We also work with organic and natural fibres, blends and special yarns — if you can imagine it, tell us. Any fibre, colour or texture can be made to order.

Care

Living with a handmade rug

A well-made rug asks for very little, and rewards you for decades.

01

Rotate it

Turn your rug every six months or so, so it wears and fades evenly.

02

Vacuum gently

Use suction without a rotating beater bar, working with the direction of the pile.

03

Blot, don’t rub

Act quickly on spills with a clean, dry cloth, pressing rather than scrubbing.

04

Clean professionally

Every few years, entrust it to a specialist cleaner for handmade rugs.
